people sitting around tableEUGENE, Ore. — Lane Community College is working with Siemens, one of the world’s largest engineering companies, in support of its Energy Management Program. The program includes a building automation systems option, which helps better prepare students for careers in the building technologies industry.

Siemens has a significant need for qualified building technologies personnel and is working with Lane to create a process of identifying students with a knowledge of building controls for possible positions in its Oregon offices.

“We’re planning to have students intern with Siemens in the summer between their first and second years in the program,” said Roger Ebbage, Lane Energy Management Program director. “This provides real-world experience for the student and gives Siemens an opportunity to evaluate them in advance of a potential full-time position.”

The program’s recently added Building Controls Option is a rigorous two-year associate of applied science degree that trains building controls technicians, a highly coveted and in-demand set of workers who manage automated systems in commercial buildings.

Ebbage attributes part of Siemens’ interest in his program to the limited number of energy management programs - especially those with a building controls option - throughout the United States.

“Lane has one of the only commercial energy efficiency programs in the country,” said Ebbage. “We have grown and specialized to meet today’s energy management needs, resulting in high demand for our graduates.”

Nationally, Siemens’ Building Technologies Division has many technical positions currently available as a result of business growth and normal attrition. Therefore, qualified candidates are in high demand. Joe Levesque, an energy engineer with Siemens Energy Management in Eugene, can vouch for the program’s quality - it landed him his current job.

“I returned to college after a varied career path specifically to obtain a degree from the Lane Energy Management Program,” said Levesque. “Siemens sees the degree’s focus on building automation controls and commercial energy efficiency as a combination of skills that are very rare and increasingly in demand throughout the industry.”
